Unit 1 Final

The idea of society teaching outside of a conventional classroom is called Public pedagogy.By extension a comedian’s role is to use humor to confront problems that saturate society.Public pedagogy through comedy is a powerful learning tool,but like a hammer comedy can be used to improve or destroy.

So what really is public pedagogy? Henry Giroux’s theory of public pedagogy, which argues that most learning takes place outside the traditional classroom. That public culture is often the primary means through which society acquires knowledge and learns to model social interactions.This means that satire and other forums of comedy that make people think about real world problems have a positive impact on society by educating the people.Humor that disconnects people  inspires people to be deafened to human suffering.That intern leads to hostile learning environments and other social problems that could have been prevented.

If an audience is to learn a joke must have a message Talking Funny is an HBO special of four popular comedians( Ricky Gervais, Louis CK, Chris Rock, Jerry Seinfeld) talking about their work. Rock’s joke about white porn .vs. black porn resonated with Seinfeld making him draw to the conclusion that black people live in a different world then white people.Just by telling a joke he reevaluated his perception.

Without a message a joke can’t teach anything and will only occupy time.C.K story of a bombing comedian pointed out that he lacked a message or purpose in his joke. His joke of “Siting on a cock cause I’m gay.” offers no substance to think about. Like wise it only perpetuates stereotypes rather than examining them.

In Taking South Park Seriously we read about how its impossible for a group that has been stereotyped to ever full assimilate into a society.The reason being is their will always be that stereotype in the minds of the society and the minority. Comedy that examines these stereotypes in order to change perception about them for the better.Comedy that doesn’t examine the stereotype in question can only maintain the status quo.

McClennen wrote about how sadistic comedy and satire affect people’s morals in Proud To Be An American Satirist.Sadist humor for example can devalue human life leading to almost sociopath behavior.McClennen points to the torture used in Abu Ghraib prison during the war in Iraq.Specifically Sabrina Harman who was a guard at the prison during the time,  who attached electrical wires to a prisoners fingers, toes, and penis because she was “playing with him”. I can’t see how a humor that devalues the human suffering could be a good thing.

In How Ha-ha Can Lead to Aha! We see scientific evidence proving that humor can improve learning in a classroom environment.a students ability to recall information on a  subject rose by 11% when a joke was told every 15 minutes. According to the nces.ed.gov the population of the US in college students in the US was 20.5 million students.If jokes where told in every class for 2 years.I estimated a minimum $282011.7195 gain across each student’s working career.

Not only do people suffer but so do the resources and productivity that those people supply.  A joke without purpose can only serve to waste. In How Ha-ha Can Lead to Aha! States that if a joke is not relevant or jokes are told too often they found that students don’t get that 11% improvement. A comedian role is to critique society in a effort to improve it.It influences the public sector, economic sector, and politics. Consider the changes in history that were inspired through forums of comedy like the American revolution.Comedy is no joke, especially when that joke can change the world!

Humor can be an effective tool to make a class more enjoyable, reduce anxiety, and improve the learning setting. Without using any resources, just by occasionally saying something funny can reduce anxiety, improve learning, and make a positive effect on students. In the study, students who listened to a joke about every 15 minutes reported a more relaxed atmosphere and higher grades on retention and understanding. These jokes cost nothing more than speaking.

Consider the cost of not using comedy. If a collage teacher doesn’t use comedy in their lessons, then they’re forfeiting 11% improvement in their class. Just remember for every student who drops out and doesn’t return to college, an average $282011.7195 is lost across their entire working career.

Instead talking about a social problem in satirical ways, we may find that the line between the education field and comedic entertainment may start to haze together. $54996652435.725 Taxes are lost across all students who failed working career. This isn’t the first time a new technology or natural phenomenon wasn’t full adopted upon its release. Computers where originally considered unsuitable for control systems, securing data, and most anything that influence life. Now computers are so depended upon we build life support machines, hold entire banks of finance data, direct traffic with them. If you told someone they could make $282011.7195 just by telling some jokes during class, it would sound so good they would think you to be a con-artist.

Believe it or not there are some technicalities to watch out for when preforming this method. It doesn’t work if you throw in jokes more often than 15 minutes apart. The article shows that more humor doesn’t mean more results. They found that if too many jokes where used or if they were unrelated then the improvement is nullified. The effectiveness of the jokes depends on how dull the material is. The joke has to be funny to the students or it won’t have an effect. Choose your jokes carefully.

Humor is already a primary means of public pedagogy. It has already proven its capacity to teach for years. It makes no sense to reject something that can only be an improvement and cost nothing. There is guaranteed loss for not using joke to teach. It is not a question of if humor will be used in teaching the future generations, but rather when will it start?

Unit 1 Portfolio Revised

In the spring of 2017 I created a research blog on WordPress.com for a work portfolio. At the time of writing this unit 1 of my class is almost over and I’ve been asked to Synthesize everything I’ve done in unit 1. The main idea was to teach the role of the comedian in society.A comedian’s role is to use humor to confront problems that saturate society.Topics that other forums of discussion prefer to avoid. Thus, people are able to talk about these problems in a way that educates and is enjoyable, intern reaching a larger public audience.Public pedagogy through comedy is a powerful learning tool,but like a hammer comedy can be used to create or destroy.

In my Talking Funny review, I write about Louis C.K story of a bombing comedian.I pointed out that he lacked a message or purpose in his joke,the exact opposite of C.K ‘s routine.All four comedians( Ricky Gervais, Louis CK, Chris Rock, Jerry Seinfeld) of the HBO special Talking Funny all update and perfect their acts constantly improving and adapting their message because they understand the destructive effect of humor.

In How Ha-ha Can Lead to Aha! We see scientific evidence proving that humor can improve a student’s ability to recall a subject by 11%. According to the nces.ed.gov the population of the US in college students in the US was 20.5 million students.Turns out each individual person of that 11% loses around 283 thousand dollars on average after taxes across their working career.The total weighed loss for the entire 11% is $248015206714.275.

So needless to say, we could be looking at even higher success rates in other topics.

In the future, Role of the Comedian will most likely be the same. However instead talking about a social problem in satirical ways, we may find that the line between the education field and comedic entertainment may start to haze together. As schools and university may require that teachers have a minimum number of jokes per course unit, in order to maximize education. It may not be something that would happen in a year or two but if we’re a society built on education then it is only logical that we would take advantage of a natural phenomenon. Computers where originally considered unsuitable for control systems that influence life, now we build life support machines dependent on them. It would be as simple as changing collage requirements to be a teacher to having some comedy courses instead of more electives.

Lindy West Revised

Lindy West is a female comedian who wrote an Open letter to white male comedians that is posted on Jezebel.com back in 5/10/2013 and confronts the negative feedback she received in her post How to make a rape joke. The Preamble of her letter talks about hostility toward women in the comedic sector. She talks about how women are often discriminated against when criticizing topics, even when those same women are more experienced then their critics. Women are 50% of the world population but are treated as a niche group.

She criticizes how shes is being criticized for implying take people should treat rape victims as seriously as shootings. Pointing to  Oswalt’s message about Aurora theater shooting. Where the point was made about not joking about the shooting and its victims to respect the people who lost their lives and deny they killer publicity. The absurdity of not treating rape victims with the same respect as victims of gun violence is madness.If someone is hurt physically and dies, and someone is hurt mentally and dies from suicide.Who’s more dead?

Comedy has a social responsibility.It can be used to confront social issues people don’t otherwise like to talk about. It can bring change and shape a society. But there are two sides to every coin. Comedy can be used to perpetuate problems, hurt victims,and drive people apart. Every person on the other of the joke is still human.Humans have different experiences and ways of handling physical and mental pain.If you punch the oceans it won’t do much,but if you punch a baby duck you’ll kill it.Making jokes at the expense of victims is not justified because it hurts people who are the most vulnerable.

At the end of the day, she talks about how no one can stop you from being hurtful or making theses jokes that drive people apart. That is your choice,but don’t expect that you wont get paddled by critics.Every joke you tell effects someone’s life, so are you going to tell jokes that improve life or are you going to go for easy targets.My recommendation, Think, then speak.

Talking funny Revised

Talking Funny is an HBO TV movie featuring Ricky Gervais, Louis CK, Chris Rock, Jerry Seinfeld is 40-50 minutes long. These four famous comedians talking about what it’s like being a famous comedian and how their comedy affects each other and themselves. From this casual talk show we see some major ideas that shows why these comedians are successful and what it’s like to be a comedian.

Most comedian fear not getting their message across and coming off as unfunny or offensive.It really comes off clear that without proper understanding of the audience and what their act’s message the bit is doomed. For example the story of the rookie comedy guitarist who flopped telling jokes like “Sitting on a cock cause I’m gay.” What message does a joke like that offer? That gay people are gay? Regardless of message the point is that comedy isn’t just making people laugh, it need meaning to it.

C.K stated “Comedy is taking people to places that they have fear, foreboding, and making them laugh in that place.” By this quote, we can infer that people have foreboding ideas that they prefer not to think of. Good comedy can make people think about these ideas in ways they may never otherwise found on their own.

We see that comedy isn’t just someone talking, its different than that. Comedians often times use facade and say some pretty extreme things to contrast the ideas we see commonly in day to day by turning them to eleven. This is shown when Louis says “I’ve said things on stage that if any person was to take them as statements I would look like the worst person alive, but that’s what makes the bit work.”

In closing, these comedians are famous not just because they think of new and creative humor, but because that creative humor has a meaning behind it that confronts problems that saturate our society that people often won’t face on their own, especially in a positive light. They put time and effort into perfecting their act and looking at what their deeper message is.
